am back in Paris area after a few weeks spent in the south of France; the weather was terribly hot. I benefitted from it to go to spend one day to the departmental records of Gard. I found only one document CAZALET in Sommières, the act of burial of Jean CAZALET: "the fifth day of September (1679) was buried sior old Jean CAZALET going approximately seventy five years (75 years) deceased the day of yesterday as that is attested by Jean PARRAN signed foundry foreman..." Only registers BMS RPR available on Sommières are those of the years 1578 to 1585, 1626 to 1670, 1673 to 1685 and 1746 to 1792. Impossible thus to find the birth of Jean CAZALET nor the marriage of his/her parents.

Huguenot Settlers in North America and Europe

Pierre Montels, of Canet, was naturalized in England and came to New York in 1702. He had been a prosperous iron manufacturer, and before leaving home he had deeded his property to his son-in-law, Noe Cazalet, who was outwardly a "new convert." When Cazalet was examined by the priests as to his orthodoxy, he replied that he had told his children to attend the mass, but that as for himself "it must come from God." Shortly after making this declaration he, too, found it best to come to New York.

In no other part of France had Protestantism flourished more remarkably than in the important province of LANGUEDOC. Its adherents, shortly before the Revocation, exceeded two hundred thousand; and in many of the towns, they still outnumbered the Roman Catholics. Yet, half a century of repression, and of not unfrequent persecution, had greatly weakened a cause which, in the early days of the French Reformation, bade fair to gain over almost the entire province. Montpellier, its principal city, welcomed the Reform with unexampled alacrity. Within a single year from the time of its introduction into the place, the Protestants were in the majority. In an outburst of misguided zeal, they seized the churches, destroyed some of them, and abolished the mass, which was not said for many years after.1 As in La Rochelle some members of the monastic orders embraced the new faith, and the bishop himself was thought to favor it.

Montpellier was one of the strongholds of the Huguenots during the civil wars, and one of their cautionary towns under the Edict of Nantes. Since the breaking up of the political party, Protestantism had waned, under the systematic oppression which was to culminate in the abrogation of the edict. The two "temples" of the Huguenots were destroyed, the one in 1670, the other in 1682; and in the autumn of the year 1685, sixteen companies of troops entered the city, to commence the "dragooning" mission which had been so fruitful of "conversions" elsewhere. As elsewhere, the terror produced by this apparition proved irresistible. That very day, six thousand of the Protestants of Montpellier abjured, and obtained the certificates1 which exempted them from the visits of the "booted missionaries" of Rome

Abjuration, in multitudes of cases, was followed as speedily as possible by flight. Many persons, however, had avoided the snare of a forced conversion, by a timely escape, and were now beyond the reach of persecution. It is not always easy to say to which of these two classes our American refugees belonged. In the list of religionists and new converts, whose goods were seized, upon their departure from France, we find the name of Pierre Monteils, an iron merchant of Montpellier, born in Canet, in the diocese of LodŠve, in Languedoc. Before leaving his home, with his wife Jeanne de Bosson, and one of their daughters, Monteils made over his property to his son-in-law, No‚ Cazalet, also a merchant, who remained in that city, professedly a "nouveau converti." His sincerity however was suspected. Questioned by the priests with reference to his conformity to the rules of the Church, Cazalet answered that he had directed his children to attend mass, but as for himself, "it must come from God." He gives no evidence of Catholicity, adds his examiner.1

Monteils had taken refuge in London, where he resided for a number of years. He came to New York early in the eighteenth century,1 and was accompanied or followed by Cazalet.2

According to the birth records of Notre Dame des Tables, the last child of Marie Monteille and Noe Cazalet was born in Montpellier on Dec. 7, 1700, so it would seem that he did not leave France until after that date.

French Reformed (Huguenot)

Many of the first permanent European settlers on Manhattan Island were French-speaking Calvinists, but they attended the Dutch Reformed Church. A French church was created in 1682, its growth spurred by the influx of Huguenots before and after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. In 1804 this church, known as St. Esprit, became Episcopalian, and it remains so today. Records from both its Reformed and Episcopalian periods are available at NYG&B as follows:

Register of the Births, Marriages and Deaths of the "Eglise Françoise à la Nouvelle York" from 1688 to 1804, originally published 1886 as vol. 1, Collections of the Huguenot Society of America; reprinted Baltimore, 1994 [N.Y. L M314.62 E71] Be sure to use the improved index by Kenn Stryker-Rodda, shelved with this volume.

"Registre de l'Eglise Reformée Protestante Française à New York," bound photocopies of the original records of baptisms 1797-1852, confirmations 1842-72, deaths 1843-52, marriages 1798-1835 [NYC G 50.1 Oversize], with index by Dr. Stryker-Rodda [NYC G 50.1 Index].

NYG&B also has two histories of this church which mention individuals associated with it: John A. F. Maynard, The Huguenot Church of New York, A History of the French Church of Saint Esprit, 1938 [NYC G 50C], and J.-A. Cabaret, Notice Historique sur l'Eglise Evangélique Française de New-York (Presbytérienne), 1897 [NYC G 50B].

Notes for JOHN EASON:

John Eason appears to be the second husband of Catherine Cazalet. The first was John Shurman. John and Catherine Shurman had one daughter, Mary. she was alive in Oct. 1747, but deceased by Dec. 2, 1751.

The Abstracts of Wills on File in the Surrogate's Office, City of New York, Vol 18, Page 370, has the abstract of the will of John Eason. Mentioned are Catherine and John Groesback as executors. Theoplilus Ellsworth and Ann Man were witnesses when the will was proved on Dec. 2, 1751. Ann said that "she rermembers that John Eason went to sea as Commander of a private vessell of War, From New York, in Nov. 1747, and that he executed the will about three weeks or a month before his departure." John Man and Isaac Man were appointed administrators because Catherine and Groesbach were both deceased.

Who were Ann, John and Isaac Man? Who was John Groesbach?

John's ship was the Pollux. He captured several prizes during King George's War before he was lost at sea. Discoverd the ships name in a book by Howard M. Chapin "Privateering during King George's war 1739-1748.

Privateering in King George's War: 1739-1748, by Howard. M. Chapin, E.A. Johnson and Co. Providence, 1928

Pg. 164-65 "the brigantine Triton (Capt. Francis Rosewell) sailed later in 1746 under Capt. Abraham Man, and captured the French snow Boree, which she sent to New York in September. Later she fell in with the Castor and the Pollux, cruised in consort with them and, on Nov. 4, 1746, off old Cape Francois, fought a large French storeship of 10 guns and over 70 men with several stands of arms for the army in Canada. After a rather lenghy fight, they finally drove her ashore, and she surrendered. The privateers were unable to float her, so they transferred part of her cargo to themselves and carried it to Turks Island. They started back to the wreck to get the rest of her cargo, but, on the way, on Nov. 24, met two French ships of twenty guns each, which they took after a nine hour battle. The Castor had eight killed and twelve wounded, but the Triton suffered no casualties. There prizes were bound from Bourdeaux for Cape Francois. The Pollus was so badly damaged in the engagement, that she went to Bermuda to refit, where she arrived before Feb. 19, 1747/47.The Tribton arrived at New York on Dec. 28, 1746, and one of the prizes the St. Margaret alias Marguerite of Bordoux, 250 tons, 18 guns, laden with wine, flour, iron and drygoods arrived on march 4, 1746/47, having been at sea sever since her capture on Nov. 24. The other prize was the ship Fort Lewis which reached New York in March. The brigantine Triton, under her old commander, Captain Rosewell, went back int0 the merchant service, and was again at New yrok on July 27, 1747."

Pg. 150 "The privateers overtood their new quarry and captured her off Cape San antonio on May 7. She was a French ship of about 200 tons, bou8nd from Port Louis fro The Havana, for convoy to France with 260 hogsheads of brown sugar, 22,000 weight of indigo, 30 scroons of coca and 15 bales of cotton. The privateers convoyed the prize to New York, where they all arrived on Friday, May 31, 1745. The prize was probably the ship St. Almanzar, which was libelled on June 7. The privateer Castor, Capt. John Burgis and the Pollux, Capt. John Easen or Eason, either particpated in the capture of the St. Almanzar, or were within sight at the time of the capture, as they claimed a share in the prize, and also a share in the china and dry good taken out of the brigantine Friendship, which was evidently captured by the Clinton and tMary Anne on this cruise."

Pg. 124 "the privateer sloop Castor, under the command of Capt. john Burges, saled in consort with the Pollux, Capt. Jeremiah Leacraft, in the autumn of 1746 and captured the ship Endeavor, which they brought into New York in Ovt. They soon saled again and cruised in cort wit the Triton of New York."

Pg. 124 "the Diana next cruised with the consort privateers Castor, Capt. John Burges and the Pollux, Captain Eason, and , on March 5, 1745/46, to the windward of Hispaniola, took the French ship St. Joseph de Egipte, 200 tons, 12 guns, 35 men, Capt. Jacob Martiene, boudn from Marseilles fro Cape Francois, with a cargo of wine, oil, soap, beeswax candles and clothes. The Pollux convoyed the prize to New York, while the Diana and Castor cruised in quest of a freet of French merchantment."

Pg. 170 The snow Royal Catherine, commanded by Capt. john burges, (formerly the commander of the privateer Castor) sailed from New York a-privateering about the first of May 1748.

Rhode Island Privateers in King George's War, by Howard M. Chapin, E.A. Johnson Co., Providence, 1926

Pg. 102 "According to Sheffield, Capt. John Brown and Phillip Wilkinson fitted out two privateers, the Castor and the Pollux in the summer of 1742 (at Newport, Rhode Island) , and the "Boston News-Letter" described these vessels as "two fine new sloops. These two vessels saided in consort, or in concert with each other, and so were sometimes called "the concert sloops."

Pg. 103 "The Castor, Capt. John Burges, and the Pollux, Captain Eason, under their new commanders, sailed from St. Kitts eaqrly in March (1745). When off the west end of Porto Rico they fell in with four Spanish men-of-war and two merchantmen, and it was with the utmost difficulty that the privateers escaped. On may 9, 1745, off the west end of Porto Rico, they retook from a Spanish privateer a prize Irish snow, late Capt. Isiah Nichols, from Antigua for Virginia, which had been taken by the Spaniards on May 6. the Spanish privateer escaped by running in amoung the shoals, where the Castor and the Pollux dared not follow."

Pg. 104

On Maryc 5, 1745-6, a little to the windward of Hispaniola, the Castor and the Pollux, under the aforesaid commanders , in consort wit the Diana of Bermuda, Capt. Skinner, captured the French ship St. Joseph dEgypte, 200 tons, 12 gunds and 35 men, Capt. Jacob Martiene, bound from Marseilles for Cape Francois. She was laden with wine, oil, soap, candles, beeswax and clothes and was convoyed by the Pollux into New York, where they arrived on Tuesday, April 1, 1746. ... Later in the year the Castor, Capt. John Burges and the Pollux, Capt. Jeremiah Leacroft, attached a french ship of 16 guns, but she beat them off, only to be taken the next day by the brigantine Success of Bermuda....The following men served on the Pollux: First Lieutenant Hezekiah Bosworth, Second Lieutenant James Goelet, Mater Lawrench Donaldson, Surgeon John Flinn, boatswain John Watson, Chief Mate William Hesman, Gunner Andrew Beven, Carpeenter Thomas McKinley, Cook Edward Griffin, Captain of the AHold James Johnson, George McGee and Captain's Clerk James King.

10. MARY5 SHURMUR (CATHERINE4 CAZALET, NOE3, JEAN2, NOEL1) was born Abt. 1735 in New York, and died 1776. She married FREDERICK HENRICH VON WEISSENFELS December 16, 1756 in New York. He was born 1728 in Elbing, Prussia, and died 1806 in New Orleans, La..

Notes for FREDERICK HENRICH VON WEISSENFELS:

Fifer George Weissenfels Society, Children of the American Revolution, is located in Palm Beach, Florida. The society was organized on October 7, 1989, by Sandra Thomas. It is named after her 4th Great-Grandfather, George Peter Weissenfels. George Peter Weissenfels was born in New York City and baptized on May 27th,1764. He was the son of Lt. Col. Frederick Henrich Von Weissenfels, who was a Baron from Prussia, who served in the American Revolution directly under George Washington at Valley Forge. George's father, Frederick, and older brother, Lt. Charles Frederick Weissenfels, were both original members of the Society of the Cincinnati. The Society of the Cincinnati is a fraternal society formed in 1783 composed of American and French officers of the American Revolution.

Young George Weissenfels, at the age of 14 years, served in the American Revolution at Valley Forge as a "Fifer". It seems only fitting that a C.A.R. Society be named in honor of a "child" who served his country in the American Revolution. George married Maria Leaycraft in New York City, N.Y. on November 16, 1791 at the Reformed Dutch Church. As an adult, George Weissenfels was an attorney in New York City. He died in New York City on September 29th, 1798. Young Fifer George Weissenfels came from a German family that had many military careers. Undoubtedly, his older brother, Charles, and his father, Frederick, were an inspiration to his love of this country.

WEISSENFELS, Frederick H, Baron de, soldier, born in Prussia in 1738; died in New Orleans, Louisiana, 14 May, 1806. During his early life he was an officer in the British service, but he emigrated to this country, and in 1763 settled in Dutchess county, New York He became lieutenant-colonel of the 3d New York battalion in 1776, and afterward commanded the 2d New York battalion at White Plains, Trenton, the surrender of Burgoyne, and the battle of Monmouth. He accompanied General John Sullivan's expedition against the Six Nations in 1779, and fought at Newton. The war left him impoverished, and at the time of his death he filled a minor office in New Orleans.

To LIEUTENANT COLONEL

FREDERICK WEISSENFELS

Head Quarters, May 20, 1782.

Sir: It has been suggested to me that a considerable number of the Levies raised by the State 73 for 8 Months, might be Inlisted into the Continental Regiments for longer periods, provided such a measure was encouraged by their Officers.

Of New York.

When it is considered of how little Service these Men are, when detached for so short a time, and what Essential benefits will accrue, not only to the public at large but to this State in particular, from their being Inlisted into the Continental Regiments of this State; I cannot but be persuaded, that you will do all in your power to forward it; but as much will depend on the Encouragement given by the inferior Officers, who are more intimately connected with the Men, It would not be amiss for you to explain to those Gentlemen, the very Essential Service they will render Country by encouraging these Inlistments, and as the Continental line must be compleated it will make no difference in their Commands whether we Inlist them or they are obliged to send them by Detachmt.

In conversation with Governor Clinton I was glad to hear he had already recommended this matter to your attention, I wish you to follow any directions he may have given you. I am &c.

The draft is in the writing of Benjamin Walker.
